"We don’t like to refer to this style as ‘dreadlocks,’ because there is nothing dreadful about it,” says Etienne who uses several methods to achieve intricate lock styles like sister locks, which uses a crochet needle-type tool to create extremely thin locks. To keep healthy locks, Etienne recommends having them shampooed, conditioned with a hot oil treatment and twisted every four to six weeks. “Twist with gel, hair grease, shea butter or products that work best for you while your hair is still wet or damp,” Etienne advises. Afterward, hair should also be fully dried, whether under a dryer or in the sun, and protected from lint at night with a silk scarf, says our Brooklyn-based expert. To finally top it off, use natural oils with added essential oils. Follow these steps, and your scalp will remain clean and your locks will always look fresh.
