The beauty industry has lost one of its most influential visionaries. George E. Johnson, the groundbreaking entrepreneur whose innovations helped reshape Black hair care and Black business in America, has passed away at the age of 99.

Long before diversity became a corporate buzzword, Johnson recognized a need that many companies ignored. He built a business centered on celebrating and serving Black consumers, creating products specifically designed for textured hair while empowering generations to embrace their natural beauty with confidence.

In 1954, with determination, vision, and a modest startup investment, Johnson and his wife, Joan, launched what would become Johnson Products Company. What began as a small venture would eventually grow into one of the most recognizable names in Black beauty, introducing iconic brands like Afro Sheen, Ultra Sheen, Ultra Wave, and Classy Curl to households across the country.

Johnson wasn’t simply selling hair products—he was building representation. At a time when Black entrepreneurs faced enormous barriers to financing and national distribution, he proved that Black-owned businesses could compete on the highest level. His company made history as the first Black-owned business to be publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange, opening doors for future generations of entrepreneurs and corporate leaders.

His influence stretched far beyond beauty aisles. Johnson understood the importance of investing in Black culture and storytelling, helping support groundbreaking entertainment platforms that showcased Black talent to audiences nationwide. His commitment to community, opportunity, and economic empowerment became just as significant as the products that carried his company’s name.

For many families, Johnson Products represented more than hair care. They became part of weekend wash days, salon visits, family traditions, and childhood memories. The familiar bottles lining bathroom shelves symbolized pride, confidence, and the celebration of Black identity during an era when that affirmation was often difficult to find.

George E. Johnson’s remarkable journey—from humble beginnings to becoming one of America’s most respected Black entrepreneurs—stands as a testament to perseverance, innovation, and purpose. His career demonstrated that success is measured not only by financial achievement but also by the lives changed along the way.

As the beauty industry and the Black business community reflect on his extraordinary legacy, one thing remains clear: George E. Johnson transformed an industry, inspired countless entrepreneurs, and helped generations see beauty through a lens of pride and possibility.

His impact will continue to be felt every time a young entrepreneur dares to build something meaningful, every time a Black-owned business reaches new heights, and every time someone embraces the beauty of their natural identity with confidence.

George E. Johnson leaves behind more than a successful company—he leaves behind a legacy that forever changed Black beauty, Black business, and American history.
