Culture, Conversation & Cardi: ESSENCE Festival 2026 Opens with an Unforgettable First Day

NEW ORLEANS — There are festivals, and then there is ESSENCE Festival of Culture® Presented by Coca-Cola®—a place where Black culture isn’t simply celebrated; it’s centered, honored, and experienced in every possible way. From powerful conversations and entrepreneurial inspiration to unforgettable performances inside the Caesars Superdome, Day One reminded attendees why this annual gathering continues to be one of the most influential cultural celebrations in the world.

With this year’s theme, “We Love Us,” the festival officially opened inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, welcoming thousands of attendees from across the country to a weekend dedicated to community, creativity, wellness, education, business, music, beauty, and unapologetic Black excellence.

The opening moments immediately paid homage to New Orleans’ rich cultural heritage. Festivalgoers were welcomed by a vibrant Mardi Gras Indians cultural procession, complete with elaborate handcrafted suits, rhythmic percussion, traditional chants, and the unmistakable spirit that makes the Crescent City unlike anywhere else. It was a fitting reminder that ESSENCE Festival doesn’t simply happen in New Orleans—it belongs here.

From there, every hallway, stage, and activation buzzed with energy.

Throughout the day, attendees filled the ESSENCE Main Stage, BeautyCon®, the Book Festival, GBEF® HQ, the We Love Us Marketplace, and the Creators & Podcast Festival, where influential voices from entertainment, politics, business, education, and media shared stories designed to inform, inspire, and empower.

One of the day’s most meaningful moments brought together two women whose names represent living history. Dr. Bernice A. King and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz reflected on leadership, legacy, resilience, and the responsibility that comes with carrying forward the work of their iconic parents. Their conversation transcended generations, serving as both a history lesson and a call to continue building stronger communities.

Hollywood was equally well represented as Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer joined actress Maria Sten for an exclusive conversation that gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at their latest projects while discussing representation and storytelling within the entertainment industry.

The Creators & Podcast Festival quickly became one of the day’s hottest destinations as actress, singer, producer, and media powerhouse Keke Palmer sat down with acclaimed actress Sanaa Lathan for a refreshingly honest conversation about career longevity, embracing reinvention, and navigating success on their own terms. The chemistry between the two stars created an atmosphere that felt less like an interview and more like listening in on a heartfelt conversation between friends.

Meanwhile, BeautyCon® attracted standing-room-only crowds as Grammy Award-winning superstar Cardi B offered a glimpse beyond the music. Opening up about entrepreneurship, motherhood, and expanding her business portfolio, Cardi reminded audiences that today’s entertainers are building brands that stretch far beyond the stage.

Politics and social impact remained central to the day’s programming as Senator Cory Booker joined conversations focused on strengthening Black political and economic influence, while other thought leaders explored topics ranging from education and wealth-building to media representation and civic engagement.

As the sun began to set, excitement shifted just a few miles away to the Caesars Superdome, where thousands packed the stadium for the highly anticipated opening night of the ESSENCE Evening Concert Series.

Hosted by Danielle Brooks and Kenny Burns, the evening celebrated this year’s “Disruptors” theme—and social media almost immediately gave the night another name.

Ladies Night.

And rightfully so.

The concert opened with an energetic performance from SZN4 before internationally celebrated DJ Joe Kay kept the audience engaged between each set, seamlessly carrying the momentum throughout the evening.

Before the music reached full speed, one of the night’s most memorable moments unfolded as former First Lady Michelle Obama joined Keke Palmer for an intimate live conversation before a sold-out audience. The exchange was thoughtful, candid, and filled with moments of humor and wisdom as the two discussed confidence, authenticity, leadership, and embracing every chapter of life with purpose. The audience responded with roaring applause, proving that meaningful conversations remain just as powerful as any headline performance.

Then came the music.

Latto stormed the stage with confidence and undeniable charisma, delivering a high-energy set packed with fan favorites that had thousands of fans dancing and rapping along from beginning to end. Her commanding stage presence once again solidified why she remains one of hip-hop’s brightest stars.

Keeping the momentum alive, Kehlani shifted the atmosphere with smooth vocals, emotional storytelling, and effortless artistry. Her soulful performance provided the perfect balance of vulnerability and strength, captivating the audience with every song.

Representing the host city, New Orleans native T99zy received an enthusiastic hometown welcome before surprising fans with an appearance from viral personality Big Marco (Shamar), sending the Superdome into another wave of excitement.

Then came the grand finale.

Closing Night One, Cardi B delivered a headlining performance worthy of the moment. Backed by stunning visuals, explosive production, energetic choreography, and a catalog filled with chart-topping hits, she transformed the Caesars Superdome into one massive celebration. Fans danced, sang every lyric, and embraced every moment as Cardi closed the evening with the same fearless energy that has made her one of the most influential entertainers of this generation.

If Day One proved anything, it’s that ESSENCE Festival continues to master the balance between celebration and substance.
